Everyone's talking about Rihanna's red dress

Everyone’s talking about Rihanna’s red dress – here it is from every angle

One of the best red carpet moments of 2017 for sure!

Rihanna loves a bit of opulence. Okay, a lot of a lot of opulence.

She donned a pretty pink Giambattista Valli gown to the Los Angeles premiere of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and opted for another creation by the same designer for the London premiere.

Harper’s Bazaar notes that she accessorised the cleavage baring dress with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Chopard jewels.

The 21-year-old Kendall Jenner arrived to the Met Gala putting her naked ambition on show

The 21-year-old wore nothing but a thong in the sheer dress, which featured a slashed design across the chest and a split skirt.

The gown was part of La Perla Haute Couture Collection designed by Creative Director Julia Haart.

The frock was a crystal draped gown in dégradé shades, complete with a barely-there painted macramé bodysuit.

The material was created from 85,000 hand painted and placed crystals and took 160 hours of labor to make.

The Kardashian/Jenners were high up on our list of ones to watch at this year’s Met Gala, and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

Kendall Jenner gave her sisters a run for their money in a sheer dress that was custom made by La Perla, and is said to have been made with 85,000 crystals and very little else.

We love the asymmetric slashed front, thigh high split and backless cut. Who says you have to choose between showing legs or cleavage? The rules are there to be broken when you’re a supermodel!

Her black mesh Christian Louboutin pumps tied this racy look together perfectly with their red soles, which matched her bold red lips. Top marks, KJ.

Unfortunately you can’t get your hands on her barely there dress, but click (right) to check out La Perla’s current collection of lingerie and ready-to-wear pieces.

Alternatively, we’ve put together a high street edit for you with picks from Missguided, Rare London and Boohoo that will help you recreate Kendall’s too hot to handle look.

Lady in yellow dress at Metro Awards revealed (Picture of the day)

Nonhlanhla Qwabe drove almost six hours to Durban to make a fashion statement at the Metro FM awards on Saturday night.

The Free State-based DJ and fashion fanatic, who is also a professional nurse, told Sowetan she had one brief for her fashion designer for the glitzy affair held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre in Durban on Saturday.

“I asked the designer to make a revealing dress for me. I need my tatoo to be showing,” she said.

“I wore that dress because I am very comfortable in my own brown skin and why should I be ashamed of myself if I am fat and have cellulite,” she said.

The 33-year-old – who is originally from QwaQwa but now lives in Bethlehem – said she did not wear the dress for attention, but to make a statement.

“I have a name out for myself already, it’s just a couple of people who don’t know who I am,” she said.

“I received so many compliments on the night. A lot of them from women who wanted to take pictures with me. They also wanted to touch my skin because I have a very nice skin.”

Qwabe, also known as Skolopad to her fans, said she would soon release a single.

A scroll on her social media pages reveals a colourful character with explicit pictures of herself in various provocative poses.

Model Ashley Graham makes history at New York Fashion Week

Ashley Graham is currently slaying the fashion game. We just celebrated her being featured on the cover of Vogue and now she landed another big win: walking the Michael Kors fall/winter fashion show at New York Fashion Week.

She became the first model beyond a size 12 to walk for renowned designer, Michael Kors – marking quite a big shift for a designer label that has been in the industry for more than 3 decades.

According to USA TODAY, at his 2016 show, Michael Kors said, “The only reason we don’t have plus size on the runway, for me to have the range of sizes I would have to have a football stadium filled with clothes before I was able to put on a fashion show. I’d have to have everything from a size 2 to a size 18.”

Yet, in reality, they label does carry larger sizes. Like up to 16.

The theme of the 2017 runway show was “sensual strength” and the models wore little-to-no makeup, paired with lamé, animal prints, sequins and ’70s fashion trends.

Graham walked down the runway in a grey body-con dress, cropped fur coat, and a big belt, looking all kinds of gorgeous.

This is truly great that Graham was the first to walk for Kors, yet I still find this “historic moment” a bit sad. Curvy models should already be mainstream in 2017.

Hopefully we will continue to see runways get more inclusive in the future.

A statue of Diana, Princess of Wales will be erected in the grounds of Kensington Palace at the request of her sons, The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

Football star David Beckham revealed that he and his wife, Victoria have renewed their wedding vows in a secret ceremony held at home.

David, 41, admitted he and his 42 year old wife have suffered a number of problems since their marriage in 1999 and that despite having four kids what keeps them together is the love they both have for each other, hence their decision to renew their wedding vows.

Speaking to  BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs show, David said: “We did throw a lot at it *the first wedding). We have renewed our vows since then and it was a lot more private, there was about six people there in our house.”

“Of course you make mistakes over the years, we all know marriage is difficult at times and it’s about working through it.

“Whenever we’ve come up against tough times, we know each other better than anybody knows us so we talk.”

DONALD TRUMP: For better or worse, lesson for Nigeria

Donald Trump, who was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States of America last Friday, is undoubtedly a very outspoken man who does not bother about how anyone receives his comment. Indeed, why this trait in Trump offends the establishment, it appeals to the vast majority of the “forgotten Americans” who voted him into power.

During the 18-month campaign, I was the only one in my family and among all my friends and associates that saw victory coming the way of Trump because I believed in his campaign strategy. So when the news filtered out that he won, I immediately issued a press statement to celebrate the man of the moment and the new policeman of the world.

I must say for the umpteenth time that Trump’s victory did not come to me as a surprise bearing in mind the thrust of his campaign to make America great again, that he disagrees with the Nuclear Treaty signed by United Nations (UN) with Iran and that he will change America’s immigration policy to ensure that only those who have genuine business in America are allowed into America, which angered and infuriated many.

Others are that he would address the situation whereby America funds the UN so heavily and yet has become a toothless bull dog, a voiceless entity because some people enjoy the power of Veto and that he would raise the living standard of workers.

In all, Trump’s unexpected victory was the result of his appeal to nationalism and patriotism and I acknowledge his courage, doggedness and audacity to take on the drug barons, illegal immigrants and minorities even when some of his Party Leaders developed cold feet and vowed not to campaign for him.

To those of us who believe in him, the victory is for the better while to those who do not believe in him, his victory is for the worse. Those who do not believe in him see him as a racist, a showman with little substance, a sexist, uneducated; a man lacking in experience, judgment and temperament and therefore unfit to rule America.

I hold the firm belief that he will make an extra-ordinary change. What is happening reminds me of the prophetic statement of UK Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, in South Africa Parliament in February 1960, when he said: “The wind of change is blowing through this continent, and whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must all accept it as a fact and our national policies must take account of it”. Those remarks were the harbinger of African Nationalism sweeping irresistibly from the North. The wind of change started in Britain in 2015 and has had dramatic effect in France, Philippines, USA and Gambia.

Contrary to expectation, the pattern of voting shows that almost 2 to 1 voters cared most about who could change the status quo in the United States of America in the recently concluded election. His major focus was the “forgotten millions of American workers” who get paid by the hour. Unlike the previous Presidents and his opponent, Hilary Clinton, he did not paint a bright vision for the future. What he did was to emphasize the divisions of the present, arouse anger and fears within the country and promise opportunities for the millions of “forgotten Americans” who he has now promised to reintegrate.

Although he is now the President of the most powerful nation in the world, Trump has to appreciate that the world is now a global village where nations complement one another. I agree that he should cure the problems of the American nation, but then, he cannot be an isolationist or a protectionist as any of these concepts will do severe damage to American interests generally.

Although during his 18-month campaign he looked like an unpredictable person, but now that he is at the driver’s seat, his perception and appreciation of the situation is bound to be different and perhaps he will find out that it will be pretty difficult for him carry out some of his tough election talks as governance is a different ball game from election campaign rhetorics. And that may already have started for soon after his victory, he travelled to Indiana to announce that United Technologies, the 45th largest company in the country had agreed to his demands and would retain 800 career manufacturing jobs in Indiana.

‘Showman with little substance’

And in any case, Trump seems to have back-pedaled on some of his statements since his victory. For instance, during the campaign, he was hostile to Mexicans. Now he said: “I am for everybody”. He also appointed a Nigerian as one of his Advisers.

But can Trump do without Nigeria like he boasted during his election campaigns and can Nigeria do without America? The answer is obvious: America can do without Nigeria, but Nigeria cannot do without America. Neither can he carry out his threat to drive away Nigerians and Muslims many of whom are already American citizensor barricade Mexico away from America.

In any case, Trump’s unpredictability may turn out to be an advantage to Nigeria because peradventure Trump carries out his threat to withdraw from Nigeria; Nigeria will have no choice than to turn to countries like China, the emerging economic lord of the world. Besides, America’s withdrawal from Nigeria will teach the latter a lesson in self-reliance and turn it from a country of mere consumers to start thinking of being producers of what it had hitherto been relying on others for.

Again, if Trumps makes good his threat of driving away Nigerians, highly qualified Nigerians will come home with their expertise and relocate their investment back home, thereby boosting the Nigeria’s economy. Besides, such a move will prevent people from investing stolen money in America while such already invested money will be returned home. Another bright side of the threat is that it will address the issue of brain drain and get our best brains to return home and boost our education sector. After all, the Yorubas say “Adaniloro fi agbara koni” meaning the one who denies the other assistance or help teaches the latter to work harder.

On the whole, Trump is a man who has the benefit of practical and business approach to issues. He is a man who has distanced himself from national establishment ways of doing things, a man who has never held any public office before emerging the President of the United States. The world, including Nigeria will benefit from these qualities inherent in the new occupant of the White House. The change he has promised may begin from himself without the support of anybody. He has done it before when he courageously and doggedly took on the drug barons, illegal immigrants and minorities even when some of his Party Leaders developed cold feet and vowed not to campaign for him. His audacity shows that he is a man who can really show the way. I wish him well.

Biological mother of Angelina Jolie’s adopted daughter Zahara begs to be able to talk to her

Poverty stricken Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, who is the biological mother of Angelina Jolie’s adopted Ethiopian daughter Zahara, has made a heartfelt plea to Jolie to let her have access or at least be able to talk to her daughter on the phone.

Lebiso who gave birth to her daughter when she was only 19 in 2005, says she doesn’t know the father of her baby because she was brutally raped by an unknown man who broke into her grandmother’s house in Shone, while she was there for a visit.
She said when she gave birth to her baby girl, she named her Yemasrech, which in her native Amharic language, means ‘good news’.

She said after she got pregnant from the rape, she was too scared to tell her parents, but when the pregnancy began to show, she was forced to tell them.

She said after she confessed that she was pregnant

Her family initially disowned her, so she went to live in the nearby town of Hosanna where she says she gave birth to her daughter in January 2005.

With no money and nowhere to live, Mentewab said her daughter became severely malnourished and was close to death.

‘My baby was sick and I was very weak and sick after the birth,’ she said.

Lebiso’s mum, Almaz Elfneh, in a previous interview said Lebiso left the baby with her and ran away when she couldn’t provide for her anymore.

But Lebiso denies abandoning her child adding that she was simply too sick to cater for her. She said: ‘I could not look after her and my mother, uncle and his wife suggested I put her up for adoption. I was so weak I agreed. I agreed that she should be put up for adoption but if I had my chance again I would have kept her. ‘By taking her Angelina has saved my baby’s life and she also saved my life. Lebiso says she knows about the divorce between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and that she also knows about the allegations made against 53-year-old Pitt. She says she knows that Pitt is a good father but that she’d rather have Zahara stay with Jolie.
She said:

“She is a good mother and all children should stay with their mother,’ she said. ‘I am sorry that they are splitting up and I will pray for them, but I do not think it will affect Zahara that much.’

She says all she wants to be able to do is talk to her child. She praised Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for giving her daughter the best life possible, adding:

‘Angelina has been more of a mother to her than I have ever been. She has been with her since she was a baby, but that does not mean I do not miss her.  ‘I miss her all the time. I think about her every day and long to hear her voice or see her face. I know when she has a birthday but I am sad because I can’t celebrate it with her. I would so much want to celebrate with her on her birthday and other special days.

Biological mother of Angelina Jolie’s adopted daughter Zahara begs to be able to talk to her

Lebiso who was interviewed by Dailymail.com has a file packed with newspaper cuttings and photos of her daughter, Zahara and Angelina Jolie but does not have any photos of her daughter on display in the tiny house she lives in, because she does not want others in the town to know she gave away her daughter.
She said even her two cousins who live in an adjoining home don’t even know that Zahara Jolie-Pitt is her daughter.
The Wide Horizons For Children agency in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, handled Zahara’s adoption and on Jolie’s return to the US with Zahara reports surfaced that her birth mother (Lebiso) had died from AIDS.
Lebiso says she is still angry that people were led to believe that she had died from AIDS when she is still alive and healthy albeit poor.
She blames a ‘Mr Fix-it’ who handled the adoption for making up the story that she had died of AIDS.

There is no suggestion Angelina Jolie did anything illegal in the adoption, or was aware of Zahara’s apparent history.
Lebiso, now 31, attends College and lives in a home that was built for her by her father before he died. She has never married and made the decision not to have any more children.

‘I have given away one baby and I do not want to give away another,’ she said.

‘I want to have the means to support my own child. If I was faced with giving away another child I would do everything in my power to stop that. I would beg every day and go door to door asking for help before I gave away another child,’ she said. ‘I do not want to be reliant on anyone and that is why I have never married. I want to be able to support myself.’ To do that, and one day start a family.

Lebiso is completing a three year course in woodwork at a local technical college. She wants to make furniture and open her own shop.

‘I would like to get the machinery and hire staff and do it all,’ she said.

Meanwhile, David Beckham has denied claims that he “pimped out” his youngest son Cruz in a bid for fame.

Gunfire in DRC capital as Kabila's mandate expires

Kinshasa – Gunfire erupted in several parts of Kinshasa early on Tuesday as Democratic Republic of Congo’s long-serving President Joseph Kabila appeared set to stay on despite the expiry of his mandate and announced a new government.

Shots rang out in several parts of the sprawling city of 10 million, especially in two northern quarters after whistles – an opposition sign of protest – were heard in several areas.

Demonstrators blew whistles and beat on improvised drums, their gesture for a red card, asking the 45-year-old who has led the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2001 to quit the top job.

Kabila’s second term officially expires on Tuesday.

State television overnight announced the formation of a new government following an agreement between Kabila’s administration and a fringe opposition group.

The new cabinet will be led by Sami Badibanga, a defector from the party of the mainstream opposition party led by 84-year-old Etienne Tshisekedi.

A muffled explosion was also heard in the posh quarter of Gombe, where the presidential palace is located. Residents said tear gas shells were fired in other areas but it was unclear who was behind the shooting.

Talks on a peaceful transition are in limbo, sparking fears of fresh violence in the unstable mineral-rich nation.

Kinshasa was a shadow of itself on Monday with barely any traffic on the main roads, public transport at a minimum, and soldiers and police outnumbering passers-by.

Shops were shuttered in the main square and there were tense scenes at Kinshasa University, where dozens of police and troops held back hundreds of angry students.

The UN rights office in Congo said 28 people were arrested in Kinshasa on Monday and 46 in the eastern cities of Goma and Bukavu.

Killings in volatile East

In the volatile east, nine rebels, a South African peacekeeper, a Congolese soldier, a police officer and a civilian were killed when militia fighters attacked several buildings in Butembo, including the prison.

A supplier of minerals crucial for everyday items ranging from smartphones to lightbulbs — tantalum, tungsten, tin and coltan – the mineral trade in the east of the country has long been linked to armed groups and conflict.

Kabila, who has been in power for 15 years, is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term but under a recent constitutional court order, he may stay on until a successor is chosen.

The ruling party and some opposition leaders have agreed to schedule an election in April 2018 at the earliest, leaving Kabila in office until the vote. But the main opposition bloc rejects this plan.

In Kinshasa, security forces cordoned off the university but students reached by telephone said they had been planning “to march peacefully” to parliament to demand Kabila step down.

An AFP video journalist and a fixer – both Congolese – were arrested at the university and detained for 10 hours before being released late on Monday.

They were questioned by officials from several services and they went through the contents of the video reporter’s phone.

Franck Diongo, the leader of a minor opposition party, was arrested and accused of detaining three Republican Guards, Kabila’s diplomatic advisor Barnabe Kikaya Bin Karubi said.

Security was also tight in the second city, Lubumbashi, in the southeast, with most shops closed and very little traffic on the roads.

Social networks have been cut or filtered since midnight Sunday on government orders and police at the weekend banned gatherings of more than 10 people.

‘Kabila won’t cave in’

In a last-ditch bid to achieve a peaceful transfer of power, the ruling party and fringe opposition groups held talks last week with the mainstream opposition led by Tshisekedi.

But after a week of mediation, they were suspended and due to resume on Wednesday.

A democratic handover would break new ground for DRC’s 70 million people who since independence from Belgium in 1960 have never witnessed a democratic transfer of power following polls.

The president has been in office since his father Laurent Kabila was assassinated in 2001. He was elected in 2006, and again in 2011, in a poll the opposition decried as rigged.

Tshisekedi’s opposition grouping has threatened to bring people onto the streets from Monday if the talks failed.

“I don’t see (Kabila) caving in to pressure,” his diplomatic advisor Bin Karubi said on Monday.

Some two decades ago, DRC sunk into the deadliest conflict in modern African history, its two wars in the late 1990s and early 2000s dragging in at least six African armies and leaving more than three million dead.

X How To Get The Perfect Eyebrows

Tweezing the Brows

  • Which hairs you tweeze and which ones you don’t makes the difference between attractively shaped brows and misshapen ones.
  • Try using an eyebrow pencil to draw on different shapes over your brow area to see which shape looks the best.
  • Use a magnifying mirror, at least a 5X magnification, so you can see each hair.
  • Go slowly (one hair at a time) so you don’t over-tweeze.
  • The beginning of the brow should align with the center of the nostril.
  • The arch of the brow should fall at the back third of the eye.
  • The eyebrow should follow the length of the eye but it shouldn’t extend into the temple area. The basic rule is that the front part of the brow should never drop below the back part of the brow. Allowing this to happen, either with the way you tweeze your eyebrows or the way you draw them on, makes you look like you’re frowning and overemphasizes the downward movement of the back part of the eye.
  • Avoid over-tweezing above the brow. A few stray hairs are fine to remove, but too much and it can create an unnatural look.
  • Do not overstate the shape of the brow; minimal brow alteration is best.
  • Do not pluck brows into a thin line thinking it will make your eyes look larger. It can look dated or give the face a surprised look and this shape is not easy to correct once the damage is done.

The Best Tools for Tweezin

  • To shape the brow, tweezing is probably the best option for accuracy and to prevent mistakes.
  • We have found the best tweezers are from Revlon or Tweezerman. Which type (both companies offer several options) works best for you is about personal preference.
  • Waxing is an option but it’s hard to control the wax. You may inadvertently remove the wrong hairs.
  • Never shave. This presents too big a risk of removing too many hairs at once, leading to a patchy, overly thin or wildly uneven brow. None of that is attractive!

Solution: Tweeze the front of the brow to align it with the back of the brow.

Tweezing and Trimming to Shape a Perfect Brow

Step 1 1. Before you start tweezing, use a lip or brow pencil to heavily draw on the shape you want; you can adjust it with makeup remover as you decide on the shape you want to create.
Step 2 2. Once the shape is drawn on, tweeze any hairs that fall outside the line of the brow.
Step 3 3. Next, brush the brows straight up with an old toothbrush.
Step 4 4. Any hairs that are too long and floppy should be trimmed with small scissors. Tweezing long brow hairs rather than trimming them can result in gaps in the eyebrow or create a patchy appearance.

How to Fill in the Brow Using Products

There are many ways to fill in a brow. The easiest to consider are:

Brow Powders or powder eyeshadows in shades that closely match the color of your brow. Choose a soft-textured matte powder and apply with a soft wedge brush or a thin liner brush.

Filling in a Brow

Begin application in the center of the brow and work outward toward the brow tip then back toward the beginning of the brow. Use short, light strokes between the brow hairs, and apply a bit more pressure (for stronger color) when defining the underside of the brow. Use a clean toothbrush (or a brow brush, which is similar but more expensive) to soften the color and groom the brow. For unruly brows, a clear brow gel may be applied to keep hairs in place. Alternately, you may apply a bit of hairspray to the toothbrush, and comb this through the brow for hold and control.

Eyebrow pencils are a standard way to fill in brows but many can produce a greasy, hard look or mat the brow hair, so make sure you use a pencil that has a smooth, light texture and soft, dry finish. If penciling doesn’t look absolutely natural, don’t do it.

Using a Brow Pencil

Follow the same application technique described under brow powders when using an eyebrow pencil. Keep in mind that most brow pencils deposit stronger color than a powder, so take care to use a light touch. If you apply too much color, soften the effect with a Q-Tip that has been dipped in makeup remover. Do not apply eyebrow pencil too close to the inner brow (near the nose). Adding more than a bit of color here tends to create a too-strong or angry-looking brow.

Colored eyebrow gels and brow tints work well for making the most of sparse, light-colored eyebrows or for giving a thicker look to most other eyebrows. These products look like mascara but they have a much lighter consistency and are less pigmented. At first, you might have trouble controlling the amount of gel or tint you apply to your brow, but once you get the hang of it, brow gel or tint can make sparse brows look full and more natural.

When applying eyebrow gels and tints, follow the basic instructions for powder eyebrow colors and eyeshadows listed above, but concentrate on the brow hair and not applying any on the skin. Be patient, it requires practice before you can easily shape and shade the brows without getting it on the skin. If the brush of your brow gel or tint is dual-sided (most are), know that the longer bristles are great for combing through the brows when hairs are normal to long in length. The short-bristled side is for more detailed work or for use on shorter, thin, or over-tweezed brows.

A combination approach, using a pencil with powder, can give you the control and delineation of a pencil, and the softer, shaded look of a powder. You can also use powder with a brow gel or tint; this can create a full softly shaped brow. You can try shaping the brow with the powder first and then finish the detail work with the pencil or brow gel. This is especially helpful if you have bald spots in your eyebrow or need to slightly extend the end of your brows so they frame your eyes better.
